English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley, LLP Celebrates its 50th Anniversary
by Ashley Carter
English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley, LLP (ELPO Law) is celebrating a major milestone: its 50th anniversary. For five decades, ELPO Law has collaborated with clients across Kentucky to develop creative solutions to their most difficult legal problems.
In January 1973 four attorneys, Charles E. English, James Lucas, Michael Owsley, and Whayne C. Priest Jr. came together to form English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley (ELPO). The firm added its first associate, Keith Carwell in 1974. For the firm’s first 20 years, founding partner Michael Owsley served as the managing partner of English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley, overseeing its business practices and growth, including the addition of new associates and support staff. After over 40 years of office locations solely in Bowling Green, Ky., ELPO opened a third office in Elkton, Ky. expanding their regional footprint into Western Kentucky. Longtime Elkton-based attorneys Harold (Mac) Johns and Judge (Ret.) Tyler Gill joined the firm, bringing decades of legal experience to the already established and well-respected firm. Today, ELPO Law is the largest full-service law firm in south-central Kentucky with thirty-two attorneys and three office locations. The firm’s attorneys and practices are consistently ranked in publications such as Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, and Martindale-Hubbell.
While the scope of ELPO’s practice has expanded since its inception, the firm prides itself on the strength, knowledge, and experience that only comes from decades of successful representation and the delivery of quality counsel.
“I firmly believe that it is a privilege to practice law, it is a true calling; and community service should be the cornerstone of any firm’s success,” said founder Charles E. English. A big part of ELPO Law’s success has been just that, service to the community. The firm has long contributed to the Bowling Green community and surrounding areas in many ways. To make the strongest, long-term impact possible, ELPO has invested in multiple non-profit organizations that serve the needs of children, provide arts programming, assist economic development efforts, and conduct or support health care research.
It is the firm’s belief those commitments will best serve the interest and continued growth and success of the community and Kentucky as a whole. “The ELPO founding partners charted a path that not only positively impacted our clients and our community, but also created a lifetime of opportunities for our attorneys, staff and our families,” said current ELPO Law Managing Partner, Bob Young. “Many of our team members have spent their entire careers at our firm, which is a testament to the positive work culture and high legal expectations created since our inception. ELPO truly is a special place to work and practice law and we look forward to a strong future.”
