25th Annual School Law Institute Held in Partnership with GRREC, WKU, and ELPO Law

Today, partners GRREC, WKU, and ELPO Law came together to host the 25th Annual School Law Institute. This day of learning took place at the Green River Regional Education Complex and welcomed more than 150 attendees including superintendents, human resource directors, principals, directors of special education, and others from across the state who deal with legal issues in education.
The agenda included a presentation by Frank DeAngelis, former principal of Columbine High School, who spoke on Lessons Learned from Columbine. Next, Ben Wilcox, School Safety Marshal, spoke about implementing Senate Bill 1, an act relating to school safety and declaring an emergency. Teresa Combs of Freeman, Mathis & Gary, LLP (Lexington, Ky) followed by addressing Special Education and Section 504, a blueprint or plan for how schools will provide support and remove barriers for students with disabilities. Next, Wayne Young, Legal Counsel for KASA, presented on Trends and Hot Topics in Personnel Law. ELPO Law attorneys Regina Jackson and Mike Owsley wrapped up the day with presentations about Difficult Student Issues and Hot Topics Affecting Public Education respectively.
The School Law Institute was created as an informative outlet to provide much needed legal updates to those who will be directly impacted in the field of education across the state.
